Ten things to know about the GST Bill

The Goods and Services Tax is one of the main items on the finance agenda of the BJP government. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that it can raise India’s GDP by one to two per cent.As the Lok Sabha takes up the GST Bill, here is your cheat sheet to the debate:

1. Officially, the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Second Amendment) Bill 2014.
2. It was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 19, 2014 by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
3. The Bill seeks to amend the Constitution to introduce a goods and services tax (GST) which will subsumes various Central indirect taxes, including the Central Excise Duty, Countervailing Duty, Service Tax, etc. It also subsumes State value added tax (VAT), octroi and entry tax, luxury tax, etc.

1. Former Odisha Chief Minister J.B Patnaik passes away

(i) Former Governor of Assam and three-time Chief Minister of Odisha Janaki Ballav Patnaik is no more. 

(ii) He passed away in a private hospital at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh at 3 am on Tuesday, family sources said.

(iii) Mr. Patnaik, a veteran Congress leader, was 89 years old and is survived by his wife Jayanti Patnaik, son Pruthvi Ballav Patnaik and two daughters – Sudatta Patnaik and Supriya Patnaik.

(iv) According to his son-in-law Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Mr. Patnaik had gone to Tirupati from Bhubaneswar on Monday to attend the convocation ceremony of Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha there on Tuesday. Mr. Patnaik was Chancellor of the university.

Navy launches stealth destroyer INS Visakhapatnam

(i) India Navy’s new stealth destroyer, Visakhapatnam, designed indigenously and fitted with advanced features, was launched here today, boosting the maritime force’s firepower capability.

(ii) The Kolkata-class warship, the first of P15-B stealth destroyers, was launched by Minu Dhowan, wife of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan, at Mazgaon Docks Ltd (MDL).

(iii) The ship, weighing approximately 3,000 tons during the launch, is slated to be christened as ‘INS Visakhapatnam’ on commissioning.

(iv) The 163-metre-long vessel will be propelled by four gas turbines, and is designed to achieve a speed of over 30 knots at a displacement of approximately 7,300 tons.

World Heritage Day 2015 observed globally

(i) World Heritage Day was observed across the world on 18 April 2015. The day is observed with an aim to create awareness among the people to conserve and protect the valuable assets and cultural heritage across the world.

(ii) The day marks the necessity of protecting the historical monuments and sites located in every part of the world by making collective efforts at international level.

(iii) The first world Heritage Day was celebrated on 18 April 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Tunisia and was approved in 1983 by UNESCO.

(iv) The 2015 World Heritage Day also marked 50th anniversary of ICOMOS.

MUDRA means Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency(known as the MUDRA bank) Mudra bank is being set up through a statutory enactment and will be responsible for developing and refinancing through a Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna. It is first set up as a subsidiary of the Small Industries Development Bank of India(SIDBI). It will later be converted into full-fledged bank through an act of the parliament.

• Viktor Troicki of Serbia has won the men‟s single title. In the finals, he defeated
  
  Russia‘s Mikhail Kukushkin by score of 6-2, 6-3. It is Viktor Troicki‘s 2nd career title. His first title was 2010 Kremlin Cup. 
• Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic has won the women‟s single title. In the finals, she defeated Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic by score of 7-6, 7-6. It is Petra Kvitova‘s 15th career title. She is two times Wimbledon Champion (2011 and 2014) and currently ranked World no. 4.
• India‟s Sania Mirza along with her American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands has won doubles title at the Sydney International Tennis Tournament 2015. Indo-American in the finals defeated top-seeded Americans Abigail Spears and Raquel Kops-Jones by score of 6-3, 6-3.

Narendra Modi gifted Miniature Painting titled Guru Nanak Dev to Stephen Harper

(i) The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 April 2015 gifted a miniature painting titled Guru Nanak Dev to Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. 

(ii) Modi was on an official visit to Canada from 14 April to 16 April 2015.

(iii) The painting is the work of Virendra Bannu, a Jaipur-based artist, who is the seventh generation artist in his family. 

(iv) Bannu has been taking forward the legacy of his family in specialized miniature art form.

Tennessee House voted to make Bible as official state book

(i) The Tennessee House of Representatives on 16 April 2015 voted to make Andrew Jackson's Bible as the official book of Tennessee, a US state. 

(ii) Now, the Bill will go to Senate for being passed and if it is passes in Senate then it will become an Official book of the state. 

(iii) The lawmakers voted 55-38 in favor of Republican Rep. Jerry Sexton's original Bill, despite questions of constitutionality of the Bill.

1. Asia Cup 2016 to be played in T20 format

(i) Asia Cup 2016 is set to undergo a radical change and will be a Twenty20 competition instead of the 50-over game, outgoing Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief executive Syed Ashraful Haq revealed on Thursday.

(ii) Ashraful said that not only would the tournament continue every two years, it would be revamped to include more Associate nations and mirror the World Cup format.

(iii) The tournament would then revert to a 50-over tournament in 2018 ahead of the 2019 World Cup in England and be played as a T20 competition again in 2020.

(iv) Bangladesh hosted the previous two Asia Cups in 2012 and 2014. 

(v) Sri Lanka won the last Asia Cup and has won the competition five times since its inception in 1984. India has won it five times while Pakistan has won it twice.

Agreements Signed Between India And France

India and France signed 17 agreement and made three announcements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first visit to the country on Friday. These included deals on Rafale fighter jets, Jaitapur nuclear reactor, renewable sources of energy, railways, smart city and several others.

Modi arrived in France on Thursday and met President Francois Hollande and business leaders on Friday. The announcements of agreements were made during a joint press conference by Modi and Hollande.
